With a goal established of furthering the health and viability of Lakes Michaela and Stearns the following members held their first meeting on December 10th:

  • Mark Gaudio
  • Chris Huskey
  • Janet Swenson
  • Brian Kapsick
  • Tom Lehmann
  • Tricia Pierce

The membership agreed to initiate a lake monitoring program which is sponsored free of charge through the University of Florida’s Florida Lake Watch Program.

Training of interested committee members will occur on January 6th. After training is completed, volunteers will then collect samples 1 day every month.

The samples will then be taken to a collection center for analysis with the results being provided back to the committee which will be used as a basis for future decision making.

Members of the committee also met with Garrison Beck who is a scientist with the Hillsborough County Environmental Management Division in December. In addition to providing valuable information, expertise and information relative to potential grants, he also will be providing our community new storm drain markers (sample shown) since the original plastic oval drain markers have deteriorated due to age. In addition, the County is also supplying, free of charge, door hangers which will provide important information relative to stormwater pollution.

So be on the lookout next year for the drain markers and door hangers and how you can assist us in keeping our Lakes healthy and viable for our continued enjoyment!
