Community Bulletin Board
Living in Twin Lakes means Living with Nature!

One of the great things about our Twin Lakes community is its natural beauty, whether it’s our three wonderful lakes or our tree packed park, we are surrounded by nature.  One of the great things the developers of Twin Lakes did was to blend the development into the natural attributes of the land and not try to isolate the community from them.  For this reason, we all have a responsibility to protect and maintain this sometimes delicate balance.  On any given day, you can experience multitudes of bird species, many different varieties of fish, alligators, snakes, turtles, foxes, and the list goes on and on.

Of these, some could be and often are considered dangerous.  Did you know that Florida is home to every variety of poisonous snakes that are indigenous to North America; these include rattle snakes (pigmy and diamond back plus several others), cotton mouths (we sometimes call them water moccasins), coral snakes, and more. Even our turtles are dangerous – have you ever had an encounter with an alligator snapping turtle? They have the strongest bite of any native creature in Florida.  The one most of us are aware of and would immediately come to mind when asked are the alligators.

For the last million or so years, if there is a body of water in Florida, it will likely have at least one alligator calling it home – and often one leads to two or more (especially after mating season).  Through the years, we have had many resident alligators in Twin Lakes; and in that time, we have never had an incident where one has become aggressive to humans.  This is because we strive to educate our human residents on how to live in harmony with these prehistoric creatures.  To that end, please take the time to read the attached presentation prepare by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) titled “Living with Alligators”. Also, for our younger human residents, feel free to print out attached coloring book and information package titled, “All About Alligators”.  Education is a wonderful thing!

The Twin Lakes Board of Director’s has established the Twin Lakes owned property as a Target Harvest Area with the FWC.  This gives the Board direct access to an approved trapper should an alligator become aggressive (which again, we have never experienced in Twin Lakes).  This will allow the Board to deal with nuisance alligators without having to contact FWC and go through the investigation and permit process.  Our hope is to never use it because experience shows, once you remove one, there is always another one ready to move into its place and you never know what you are going to get.  This only relates to Twin Lakes’ property, if you experience an aggressive alligator on your private property, you have every right as a home owner to report the incident to FWC.

The key to living together with nature is generally as simple as stay away and avoid interaction. Please don’t feed the wildlife – it is not doing them any good and it makes them less fearful of human interaction.  If you do encounter an aggressive alligator, please contact Communities of America at (813) 685-6473 to report the incident.  Please be prepared to describe the situation including the location of the incident, an estimate of the alligator’s size, and a description of the event.

We want all of our residents to live together peacefully (and safe), that is one of the things that has always made Twin lakes a great place to live!
